Indi Clouds, Benny, and Don Modo Form a Love Triangle in Clouds Don’t Cry First Music Video

Modo’s home studio was the most recent location of a single-night song creation pioneered by Jamaal the RX’s funky beat, a lovey-dovey, 70s-style sound that whispered sweet nothings into Indi’s ear. It wasn’t planned or premeditated, but most of their magical collaborations aren’t. When Clouds Don’t Cry and Don Modo are involved, things just fall into place.

Between bites of her chicken dinner, Indi wrote the chorus for the unnamed song, letting the beat sing the chorus for her. Tangling ethereal singing with her signature snappy rhymes, she becomes the love interest, her lyrics portraying the complex experience of being romantically pursued.

“A lot of times, being pursued doesn’t necessarily have any depth to it, so… the chorus [is] looking for an in-depth connection,” she says.

Both Benny and Modo emphasize love and longing in their verses, with Benny embodying her “lover girl” character with a conversational-type rap and Modo finding his flow in an all-Spanish monologue that showcases his quick yet deliberate cadence.

“When you hear me rapping in [this] song, that’s my cadence, my flow,” Modo says. “It just fit perfectly for me. As soon as I heard [the] beat, I knew I liked it.”

Benny’s verse, on the other hand, is marked by witty wordplay and compliments, her portion ending with a spoken outro that blends humility with confidence.

“‘Listen, you think we could be more than friends? I just think there's really something about you. And I'm really not this smooth, but…’,” Benny says.

Although the song leans more emotional and relatable, Benny wanted to add a comedic flair to the music video. She transformed the Treehouse Creations studio space into an uber-girly bedroom, complete with a fuzzy purple rug and twinkly lights dangling on the wall as Indi lay on the floor, her outfit pink and cutesy, reminiscent of Lizzie McGuire. And just like Lizzie, Indi is unbothered as Benny and Modo pine after her.

“I just thought it was funny to be arguing over this chick and she don’t want neither of us,” Benny says. “I didn’t think that hard about it.”

In the end, Indi’s character ends up falling for the attention of a third, unassuming character played by Aaron Matsuura. Her decision to decline both adoring suitors and instead choose a last minute, less adoring option only contributes to Benny’s original clever intent, the final product being exactly what she envisioned.

There is no official release date for the unnamed song and accompanying video, but the group is having fun teasing their audience with behind-the-scenes footage and photos. The whole experience – writing and recording the lyrics, mixing and mastering the audio, taping the video, and collaborating as a group – has sparked a deep desire for similar projects together in the future, so stay tuned for more Clouds Don’t Cry x Don Modo magic.

“We’re just doing what we do,” Modo says. “That’s about it.”
